The Jotnar were the giants of Jotunheim, the main foes and counterparts to the Vanir and the Aesir of Asgard (home of the Gods). There are many conflicts between the gods and the giants within the mythologies, usually ending in favour of the gods. The Jotnar were gigantic, powerful beings, but they also possessed skills with magic and could shape shift from one form or another to fool the gods.
